Corporal Maxam served with the 4th Marines near Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. On February 1968, Maxam observed the enemy gathering for an assault and moved his fire team to the weakest section of the perimeter. Running to an abandoned machine gun position, Maxam manned the position through three wounds. After being wounded too severely to reload the machinegun, Maxam continued to fire at the enemy with his rifle. Maxam manned his post for eleven and one-half hours, eventually succumbing to his wounds. For his great determination, Maxam received the Medal of Honor.
