MG Shafter served with Co. I, 7th Michigan Inf. at Fair Oaks, Virginia. On May 31, 1862, Shafter was returning from working on bridge construction to find the enemy charging across an open field. Shafter's horse was shot out from beneath him and he received his own wounds. Over the next four days, Shafter concealed his wounds and continued to engage with the enemy until all other wounded were extracted from the area. For his devotion to duty, Shafter received the Medal of Honor.
