Mrs Artie G. (Cullop) Finch was born in Indiana, 6 Oct 1898, to James E. and Lydia Ellen (Wyant) Cullop. Artie was the niece of Congressman William Allen Cullop of Vincennes, IN. The Cullop’s moved to Missoula, Missoula County, MT, where James and Lydia lived the remainder of their lives. Artie grew to womanhood in Missoula and worked as an assistant court reporter and stenographer. From Missoula Artie enlisted in the U.S. Navy in World War One as a yeoman first class, or “yeomanette” as these women naval veterans were colloquially called then. The Navy called Artie to active duty on 18 Sep 1918, and assigned her to the U.S. Navy Yard, Bremerton, WA, where she worked as a stenographer. She married Frank C. Finch, they later divorced in 1934. Artie moved to Salem, OR, later in life. She died there in a nursing home 19 Apr 1974. In Montana 1942 Artie claimed to be the first female Navy veteran from Montana. This isn’t factual. Records of the Montana adjutant general show Irma Myrtle Wright, Denton, MT, was the first female Navy veteran from Montana. Wright enlisted 8 March 1918 from Denton. 
May Artie rest in peace, America and Montana thanks her for her dedicated service to the U.S. Navy in World War One.
