August Sen Woi Chin was born on August 1st, 1925, in Hilo, Hawaii, to his parents, Tong and Esther L. Chun. He had 11 siblings. 
August had completed an eighth-grade education by the time he was he was drafted into the United States Army. At the time he filled out his World War II draft card, we worked at Shop 11 at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. He began his service aboard the US Army Transport (USAT) ship Admiral E.W. Eberle. August was 21 years old. At this point, he had been serving at sea for two years and two months and he worked as an able-bodied seaman.
After working on the USAT Admiral E.W. Eberle, August worked on the USAT
General WM Weigel. Another Army transport ship, this vessel sailed from Yokohama,
Okinawa, Manila, Guam, and Honolulu, arriving at Honolulu as its final destination. The ship departed on December 16th, 1948, with August joining aboard on October 28th, 1948, in San Francisco, California, as a twenty-three-year-old who had served three and a half years. He worked as a junior administrative clerk, moving to a higher-ranking position than that of his last ship.
After this, August worked on General Daniel I Sultan vessel. First, August worked as a junior administrative clerk on the USAT General Daniel I Sultan, which sailed from
Yokohama, Okinawa, Manila, and Guam to Honolulu. It set out to sea on November 28, 1949, and August had engaged with the ship as early as October 26, 1949. Continuing his service on this ship, August worked on the USAT General Daniel I Sultan, which sailed from San Francisco, California, on November 13, 1950.
August Sen Woi Chin was later discharged from the military. He married Sumie Chin, then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, and then to Bakersfield, Kern, California. He passed away on January 6th, 1998.
