Robert "Bert" Tallsalt, 85, died April 18, 2003 in Phoenix.

Mr. Tallsalt was born on March 10, 1918, in Copper Canyon on the Navajo Reservation and was a resident of Kayenta.

Mr. Tallsalt was a member of the Bitterwater Clan. He volunteered for the U.S., Marine Corps and served as a Navajo Code Talker during World War II. He was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal in 2001 for his service to the country.

Following the war. Mr. Tallsalt received a degree from Utah State University and began a career as an educator at Intermountain School in Brigham City, Utah. He served as a councilman for the Navajo Mountain Chapter of the Navajo Tribe in the 1950a and was active in the Navajo Code Talkers Association until his death.

Mr. Tallsalt will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his strength, integrity, wisdom and courage as well as his contributions to our nation's freedom.
