Bruno Raymond Orig was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Filipino parents. His father and stepfather had both served in the Army and Bruno carried on this tradition by enlisting after graduating from high school in 1949. He was assigned to the infantry and sent to Korea with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He had only been there for three months when he was involved in a fierce fight in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni. When he noticed that the entire crew of one machine gun were all wounded, he unhesitatingly manned the weapon. According to his Medal of Honor citation, Orig “continued to inflict heavy casualties on the enemy until the company positions were overrun. Later that day, when the lost ground was recaptured, Private Orig was found dead beside his weapon and the area in front of his gun was littered with enemy dead.” Orig was originally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross which was upgraded to the Medal of Honor on January 3, 2025.
