Dorothy L. Hatch was born Dorothy Recchia on September 5, 1922, in Burbank, Los Angeles, California. She was raised as Dorothy DeMarco by her mother Elizabeth Santino and stepfather Anthony DeMarco, an Italian immigrant, in Burbank and later Glendale, California. She grew up alongside her brother Leonard and completed four years of high school by 1940. 

During World War II, Dorothy served in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Yeoman First Class. While specific details regarding her enlistment date, discharge date, and duty stations are not available, her service reflects the vital contributions women made to the U.S. Navy during the war. 

Following her military service, Dorothy returned to the Los Angeles area, where she worked as a clerk typist for a furniture wholesaler. She married Lee H. Hatch on July 10, 1960, in Santa Barbara, California, and later relocated to Frazier Park in Kern County. Dorothy L. Hatch passed away on September 20, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. She is buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery, where her headstone bears a Christian cross.
