Edith Anne Stein was born on May 20, 1920, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. At the time of her
birth, her parents were living in Pennsylvania and rooming with another family. Her father was a
Russian immigrant who operated his own tailoring shop, reflecting the entrepreneurial efforts
common among immigrant families in the early twentieth century. Her mother was born in Austria.
Together, their backgrounds provide important cultural and socioeconomic context for Stein’s early
life as the child of European immigrants in the United States.
Prior to her military service, Stein lived in Pennsylvania. Her early adulthood unfolded during a
period of significant national and global change, as the United States entered World War II and
women increasingly took on expanded roles beyond traditional domestic spheres.
During World War II, Stein served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). She began her
military service on June 21, 1944, and was discharged on September 1, 1945. Her service occurred
during the later stages of the war, when women in the WAAC played essential roles in military
administration, logistics, and support operations.
Following her military service, Stein returned to civilian life. She later married Daniel Stein and
resided in California.
Edith Ann Stein passed away on March 30, 1988, in Ventura, California, at the age of 67. She was
laid to rest at Los Angeles National Cemetery beside her husband, Daniel Stein.
