Edith M. Carter Age 81, passed away August 27, 2000 in Ingleside Nursing Facility, Hockessin.  She was a member of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion "SixTripleEight."  The unit served overseas in Birmingham, England and Rouen, France and processed over 17 million pieces of mail for the troops in six months (February 1945-July 1945).  In March 2022, President Biden signed legislation awarding the unit the Congressional Gold Medal.

Daughter of the late Clarence Carter & Margaret McDaniel Carter. Sister of the late Alvin, Harry, Thomas & Eugene Carter. Also survived by a devoted cousin, Dorothy Carter Johns; cousin/niece Maryanne L. Johns, who cared for her in her later years; many other nieces, nephews, cousins & friends. Edith graduated from Howard High School, class of 1936. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Wilberforce University, Ohio, in 1941. She had been a teacher for the Red Clay Consolidated School District & the former Wilmington Public Schools for 45 years before retiring in 1993. She was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Army Women's Army Corps from 1942 to 1945. She was a member of Brandywine Post #12 of the American Legion, holding the position of District I Commander; Post #2765- the Veterans of Foreign War life member; The football club of Oddfellows; RSVP, Delta Sigma Theta sorority life member, (Wilmington alumni chapter), & Phi Delta Kappa sorority.  *The preceding content is not intended as a comprehensive biography, but it highlights their significance as a result of military or civilian distinction, lasting achievements, or association with impactful national events.

Hello Ms. Edith Carter,

Thank you for your service with the "SixTripleEight" during WWII.  I made a documentary about your unit in 2019, and well, y'all blew up as the young folks say today.  Millions know what your unit did during WWII.   Movies, a Broadway musical, stage plays, a fiction book, a graphic novel have all been done telling your story.  In March 2022, the current President of the United States, Joe Biden from Delaware, signed legislation for the "SixTripleEight" to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest civilian award.  Now, you and your sisters-in-arms will never be forgotten.
