Sergeant Emanuel Stance (Indian Wars) is a Notable burial at https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ftmcpherson.asp. Emanuel Stance was born in Louisiana in 1848 and he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1866. Stance joined Troop F, 9th Cavalry, and spent most of his career on active frontier duty in the Southwest. Sergeant Stance received the Medal of Honor in May 1870 for unquestioned courage. However, he had a volatile personality and drove his men hard. Stance was demoted to private and restored to rank several times. In 1885 Troop F was posted at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. There, Stance was murdered on Christmas Day 1887, likely by his own men. In 1947, his remains were transferred from Fort Robinson to Fort McPherson National Cemetery,

Fort McPherson National Cemetery

Stance was the first African-American to receive the #MOH May 20, 1870 while serving in Troop F of the 9th Cavalry Regiment at Fort McKavett during the Indian Wars.
Stance was sent with a patrol to find the Apaches who had kidnapped Herman Lehmann and his younger brother, Willie, four days earlier. Stance and his men located the raiding party near Kickapoo Springs, about 14 miles north of Fort McKavett and opened fire. The Apaches abandoned their stolen horses and fled, enabling Willie Lehmann to escape during the chaos. On the return to the fort, Stance and his troopers charged natives at least two more times and returned with 15 stolen horses. None of Stance's men were injured. For his bravery on this mission, Stance was cited for "Gallantry on scout after Indians" and received the award on June 28, 1870.
