Enid Ernestine Clark was a member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Enid was born in Massachusetts in December, 1922, and she enlisted in the United States Women's Army Corps in September, 1943. Enid once said, "I had no brothers, no sisters, and I thought somebody in this family had to work for the war effort, so that's why I went." In March of 1945, Enid was transferred to the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, and she served in Europe. The 6888th was a battalion that was essentially black with at least one Puerto Rican and one Mexican woman. The unit was active 1945 - 1946 and had 855 women under the Command of Major Charity Adams. Nickname: "Six-Triple Eight". The 6888th consisted mostly of all African-American women who were assigned to Birmingham, England, Rouen, France, and Paris, France, during World War II. Their mission was to clear several years of backlogged mail in the European Theater of Operations (ETO), assuming responsibility for redirecting mail to the 7 million US military and civilian support personnel in the ETO. The Six-Triple-Eight moved almost 200,000 letters and packages daily. In February, 1946, the unit was disbanded at Fort Dix, New Jersey, with no ceremony, no parade and no public acknowledgement of the vital role they played in boosting the morale of young American troops who had fought to make the world a safer place. Enid received an honorable discharge on March 5, 1946. On March 14, 2022, President Joseph Biden signed an act into law awarding all members of the battalion with Congressional Gold Medals.
