Evelyn Urich Einfeldt was born in Kansas in 1922. When World War II started she moved to Iowa to live with relatives and work at a defense factory. In 1943 she joined the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). After training Hunter College in New York, she and 66 other WAVES were sent to Dayton, Ohio to build a code breaking machine at the National Cash Register Company. 

Operation Magic produced a total of 125 code breaking machines giving Allied forces a great advantage in decoding enemy messages. 

After the war she was station at the Naval Air Station in St. Paul, Minnesota, until it closed. She was discharged Spring 1947

July 1947 she married Robert Einfeldt, also a former Sailor. Now living in Oklahoma, the couple raised two daughters, Sharon and Barbara. Even after retirement, Evelyn stayed active in many societies. She was a charter member of the Women Military Service for America, WAVES National, U.S. Naval Cryptologic Association, Women's Veteran Organization, Sooner WAVES, The Crescent Society, United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts, Torrance Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary (Torrance, CA), Dupont Avenue Sewing Club (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and numerous garden clubs.

In 1996 she was named the Oklahoma Female Veteran of the Year. 

Einfeldt died in 2006 at the age of 84. Chief Specialist Evelyn Urich Einfeldt is interred at Fort Sill National Cemetery, next to her husband, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Robert Einfeldt.
