Beans for Breakfast

In the midst of World War, in battles so fierce
His courage, his story, his valor, so clear
A sailor, a gunman, in the Navy he served
For his bravery and heart, the title of hero is deserved
At only fifteen, he enlisted so young
At a bootcamp in Maryland his journey begun
Beans for breakfast, a Navy tradition
Shared among soldiers, all on the same mission
On ships that were sailing across the blue ocean
He would think of his brother, who was also fighting with devotion
When he finally found out that the war was over
He spotted a young girl and moved in closer
He planted a kiss on her lips so slick
As a joyful photographer captured a pic
The feelings were flowing on that V. J. Day
And a picture was worth more than any words could say
He was a mailman after the war
As well as a father and a semi-pro baseball star
Living so good in the land of the free
He’d weather life’s storms like he did on the sea
His legacy lives on, in stories retold
A hero who ate beans, in a navy so bold
