Sergeant Timmerman served with the 6th Marines, 2nd Division during action on Saipan, Marianas Islands. On July 8, 1944, Timmerman maintained steady fire from his antiaircraft sky mount machinegun. Seeing a target, Timmerman ordered his tank to stop, stood exposed from the turret, and prepared to fire. When an enemy combatant dropped a grenade into the turret, Timmerman blocked the hatch with his body, saving the other crew members. For his sacrifice, Timmerman received the Medal of Honor.

Grave marker image for (GRANT TIMMERMAN).

i came upon grant f timmerman when my beloved father died in 2007, my father was also a member of the royal marine corps here in the netherlands. I have the same surname as grant, Timmerman. My name is Rik Timmerman and because of the foto of Grant F Timmerman, i think he is a faraway family member, because my father and he look identicall. I am proud that in the honor of Grant F Timmerman a navy vessel was named after him. With great respect,

Rik Timmerman

Grant was a fellow warrior with my father in law Theodore Hayman. Theodore was a Navy Corpsman who served with Grant in the 2nd Marine Division in Saipan when Grant was killed in action while giving his life to save others in his tank. My son is named after Grant and my son's daughter carries Timmerman as her middle name. A true hero who will also be part of our family.
