Howes was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Ogden, Utah. He served in the U.S. Navy at the tail end of the First World War and became the captain of the Pacific Fleet’s swim team. After his wartime service, Howes began modeling shirts and detachable collars, which led to opportunities in the film industry. His career in Hollywood spanned the silent film era into the modern age of sound films. With the advent of “talkies,” Howes began playing villains, predominantly in Westerns, and continued to act throughout the 1940s and 1950s before retiring due illness. He was sent to the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital and passed away there at the age of 64.
