Jem Yin Lew was born in Guangzhou, China on October 26th, 1924. He immigrated to the United States at 12 years old with his father. He attended high school in Los Angeles and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he attended UCLA. Although he intended on leaving the United States to head back to China, Jem met Alvina, his future wife, at a bus stop on the way to UCLA. The couple got married on July 3rd, 1948 and remained together for over 44 years until Alvina's passing in 1993. During his time in the war, he had various roles that fit under 2nd Lieutenant , such as supply officer, adjutant, and bombardier instructor, which all operated under unit 3501st Army Air Force Battalion Unit. 
 	Once settled in Los Angeles with his wife, Jem had two sons and two daughters. He co-owned a mechanic shop called Blue Chip Manufacturing Company. Jem and his wife attended various Asian American community events and were involved with the Chinese American Citizen Alliance and the Asian Business Association, of which Alvina was the president from 1983 to 1985. 
Jem Yin Lew passed away on November 29th, 2008 and is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery alongside his wife.
