Joseph Battise was born on April 24, 1880, in Mobile, Alabama. Although little is known about his siblings, records indicate that he had a brother-in-law named Frank McMillen. Joseph's military career began when he enlisted in the United States Army on October 20, 1899. Serving in the 10th U.S. Cavalry, a renowned unit of African American soldiers known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," Joseph rose to the rank of Master Sergeant (M SGT). His service spanned over two decades, including participation in World War I, before his discharge on February 23, 1926. His military tenure, from 1899 to 1926, showcased his dedication and resilience in the face of adversity, contributing to the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers who fought bravely despite systemic racism. Following his distinguished military career, Joseph moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1928. Here, he transitioned to civilian life and took up work as a painter, a trade that allowed him to support his family and integrate into the community. By 1930, Joseph owned his home, a significant achievement during a period when African Americans faced substantial economic and social barriers. His ability to read and write further exemplified his determination to overcome the limitations imposed by a segregated society. Joseph's personal life saw him marrying Mattie M. McDole on November 16, 1918, in Cochise, Arizona. At the time of their marriage, Joseph was 38 years old, and Mattie was 22. The couple had a daughter, Gloria Whitt Battise, born on October 18, 1922. This small yet close-knit family navigated the challenges of the early 20th century together, with Joseph's military background likely providing a foundation of discipline and perseverance. Joseph Battise passed away on March 27, 1941, in San Francisco, California. Joseph's journey from Mobile, Alabama, to his service in the U.S. Army and later life in California encapsulates the resilience and dedication of many African American veterans who served their country with honor, despite facing systemic challenges and discrimination.
