Sergeant Muller served with the 305th Inf., 77th Division near Ishimmi, Okinawa. On May 15 and 16, 1945, Muller and his platoon were stopped by heavy automatic fire. Muller, on his own initiative, surprised the enemy by leaping up and charging at their emplacement. The hard-fought ground was lost, and Muller tried the same trick to re-take the emplacement. While moving forward, Muller saw a grenade land near two men in a foxhole. To save his comrades, Muller threw himself over the grenade and smothered the blast. For his sacrifice, Muller received the Medal of Honor.
