Lieutenant Sarnoski served with the 43rd Bomber Group over Buka Area, Solomon Islands. On June 16, 1943, Sarnoski volunteered as bombardier on a photographic mapping mission. Shortly before completing the mission, the bomber was intercepted by twenty enemy fighters. Sarnoski fought off the attackers at the nose guns, allowing the pilots to complete the course. When the bomber was damaged and five crew members wounded, Sarnoski continued to fight until he collapsed on the guns. For his sacrifice that allowed the successful completion of an important mission, Sarnoski received the Medal of Honor.

This is my great uncle thank you for the comments.

My name is Craig Britton and my family and I live on oahu and attend the service at punchbowl every year. The tradition since they were little is to place a small flag on a grave that stands out to them. My youngest boy picked this one and we researched his name later and couldn't be more impressed with his story.
