Born in Louisiana, Leon Jones (1854-1908) served in the U.S. Army from 1870-1900. 

He was 22 years old and a farmer when he was recruited at Jackson Barracks, New Orleans. 

The career soldier joined Company D, 25th Infantry. The 25th Infantry was one of the segregated regiments established for black enlisted men after the Civil War, who became known as Buffalo Soldiers. 

Sergeant Jones accompanied his regiment to the Western territories, guarding mail stages and performing other duties at forts in Montana, South Dakota, and Texas.

 In 1900 he was stationed in San Antonio; he may have lived and worked as a porter in Denver, Colorado, from 1901-1907. Jones died December 6, and is buried in Section E, Site 44.
