North Carolinian Millie Dunn Veasey was born in 1918 and graduated from Washington High School in Raleigh. She enlisted in 1942 and joined the “Six Triple Eight” Battalion, the only all-female, all-black unit to serve overseas during World War II. Dunn arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, in early 1945 among the 800 or so “women in technicolor” who overcame prejudice serving in the Women’s Army Corps – first stationed in Birmingham, England, then Rouen, France. Staff Sergeant Dunn was discharged in 1945. She married Warren Veasey in 1949, graduated from St. Augustine College in 1953, and became president of the local chapter of the NAACP (1965-1968). The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation honored her service and life-long advocacy of education and civil rights. Veasey died March 9, 2018, at age 100.

Aunt Millie was smart, kind, helpful, and fashionably ready on any given day.  She was also sharp, intelligent, intuitive,  and straighten you out with just a few words.  My Dad, McKeever and her other siblings looked to her for sound advice.  I really miss her! 

Hello Millie Dunn Veasey.  Thank you for your service as a soldier in the SixTripleEight.  Wanted you to know that Sen, Jerry Moran from Kansas and US Rep Gwen Moore from Milwaukee have submitted legislation for you all to receive the Congressional Gold Medal.  It's gonna happen this year.  Only eight of your sisters in arms are still alive, but they are carrying the torch.  The SixTripleEight has been on CNN, CBS, NBC, New York Times, PBS, Washington Post and y'all have received numerous awards.  There's a beautiful monument in your honor Fort Leavenworth, Kansas
