Richard Amos was born on the ninth of September, 1892, in Columbus, Mississippi. He grew up with his mother, Mollie in Mississippi. Amos’s mother married twice. Her first marriage was with Mack McCowen in 1896. The three of them lived together in a house that McCowen rented. Then, in 1904, his mother remarried a man named Hazzard Whitfield. The three of them lived together in a house that Whitfield owned. Whitfield did farm work while Mollie cooked for a private family. Richard Amos was a servant at a hospital. Four years later, he enlisted into the Army. 

Richard Amos began his first tour on November 9th, 1914. He enlisted from Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. Amos was in the E Company of the 25th Infantry. During his first enlistment, he went up in rank to Private 1st Class (PFC) on April 15th, 1918. Amos was honorably discharged on March 1st, 1919. On that same day, he reenlisted and was placed as a PFC in K Company for the 25th Infantry. During this enlistment, he married a woman in 1920 named Allie Amos who was born in Texas. Amos was honorably discharged for a second time on August 9th, 1922. 

After his service, Amos and his wife moved to Los Angeles. In 1930, he owned a home that cost four thousand dollars. Amos worked as a stock-man at a grocery store. Ten years later, Amos was a housecleaner for private homes. He made $30 for his work. His wife, Allie, was a maid for the post office. She made $700 for her work. Amos passed away on the 28th of March in 1946.
