Private Samuel Kennerly (Revolutionary War). Kennerly (1754-1840) hailed from Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of James and Elizabeth Winston Kennerly. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Kennerly enlisted in Captain Patrick Buchanan’ s Augusta County militia and fought with them against the Cherokee in June 1777. He volunteered a second time in January 1781 with Captain Thomas Rowland’s Botetourt militia, with whom he fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Kennerly’s pension file alleges that he took a cocked hat and feather from a British officer and that he was wounded in the head during the battle. After the war, Kennerly moved to Missouri when he was 86 years old and was living with his sone when he passed away. His obituary read, “Farewell to thee, old soldier!” While Kennerly’s original burial site at Jefferson Barracks has been lost to history, a memorial stone dedicate din his honor can be found in Section MB, Site119.
