Shioji Jimmy Kushida was born in Oakland, California, on January 2nd, 1915 to Japanese immigrants. Shioji attended school in Alameda, California, from elementary until high school. His father worked as a farm operator and manager, and he aided his father’s work by working as a houseman and yardman. On September 28, 1943, Shioji and his family were removed from their residence in California and relocated to the Topaz Relocation Center in central Utah, one of ten internment camps.

On July 21st, 1947, Shioji enlisted in the United States Army. Although he was discharged on June 27, 1949, he reenlisted soon after on July 18th, 1949, and served until August 31st, 1967.

He served in the Vietnam War and the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service. After he was discharged in 1967, Shioji moved back to the Bay Area. Shioji Jimmy Kushida passed away on August 28th, 1995. He was 80 years old.
