Violet Whittney was born on August 2, 1898, in England. Both of her parents were also born in
England. By 1950, she was living in Los Angeles, California, as a lodger and had completed four
years of high school.
She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps on January 31, 1944, from New Haven, Connecticut,
and served during World War II. Her military records also list service in the United States Air
Force. She held the rank of Private.
After her military service, Violet worked as a practical nurse in Los Angeles. According to the
1950 Federal Census, she worked 80 hours per week for 40 weeks in the previous year and
earned $1,750. By this time, she was divorced.
Violet Whittney passed away on February 18, 1973, and is buried at Los Angeles National
Cemetery.
